Moldavija, Moldau or Moldova?
In the German-speaking area
the designation of a country which is between Romania and the Ukraine,
not only for politician, but also for scientist and journalist a not low
problem. They use no standardized term.
In the German-speaking media the speech is
mostly from "Moldavia"; this designation is derived from the
slawisierten form "Moldavija". "Moldavia" is the adequate translation of the
Rumanian designation "Moldova" into German, and with international treaties with
German-speaking countries the designation "the republic of Moldavia" is
applied. However, with "Moldavia" miscellaneous is called. "Moldavia" is named the area all around Iasi (Romania) which was known till 1862 as a
principality Moldavia (tare Moldovei).
"Moldavia" is also the German
designation for the Bohemian river Vltava and the piece of music of the
same name Smetanas which refers to this river. With it this designation
rescues the danger of the mistake. The designation "Moldova" is applied for
following reasons:
- This designation is identical with
the official own designation of the state (which it is a matter to respect)
which has expressed its independence after the breakdown of the
Soviet Union (1991)
- Certain historic connotations are connected with every other designation like
"Moldavia", "Moldavia", "Moldavija"
- Misunderstandings are avoided,
because the designation "republic Moldova" exists only since the establishment
of the republic Moldova (1991)
